    Complete Maintenance Schedule

    ### Every 250 Hours (or monthly)

  1. Change engine oil and oil filters (4× oil filter elements)
  2. Check coolant level and concentration (maintain 3–6% SCA)
  3. Inspect drive belts for wear and tension
  4. Check air cleaner restriction indicator
  5. Inspect all fluid levels (coolant, oil, fuel)
  6. Check battery electrolyte level and connections
  7. Drain water from primary fuel filter/water separator
  8. Inspect engine mounts for deterioration
  9. ### Every 500 Hours (or quarterly)

  10. Replace primary fuel filter/water separator element
  11. Replace secondary fuel filter elements (2×)
  12. Clean crankcase breather
  13. Inspect turbocharger compressor wheel and housing
  14. Check exhaust manifold for leaks and cracks
  15. Inspect aftercooler core for leaks
  16. Test safety shutdown devices
  17. Record engine performance data (RPM, temperatures, pressures)
  18. ### Every 1,000 Hours (or semi-annually)

  19. Replace air filter elements
  20. Inspect and adjust valve lash (inlet: 0.38 mm, exhaust: 0.76 mm)
  21. Inspect electronic unit injectors (EUI) — check for leaks and spray pattern
  22. Service raw water pump (replace impeller)
  23. Inspect heat exchanger zinc anodes and replace if >50% consumed
  24. Test coolant for SCA concentration
  25. Inspect alternator and starter motor
  26. ### Every 2,000 Hours (or annually)

  27. Replace coolant — use CAT Extended Life Coolant (ELC) or SCA-treated water
  28. Overhaul raw water pump (full seal kit and impeller)
  29. Inspect turbocharger bearing play (axial and radial)
  30. Clean and test all temperature and pressure sensors
  31. Inspect vibration damper for swelling or fluid leaks
  32. Full thermographic inspection of electrical connections
  33. ### Every 4,000 Hours - Top overhaul assessment — compression test all 12 cylinders - Overhaul turbocharger(s) if bearing play exceeds limits - Replace fuel transfer pump - Inspect camshaft lobes and followers - Full oil system flush if changing oil brand or type - Inspect all rubber hoses and replace if deteriorated ### Every 8,000 Hours - In-frame overhaul — replace cylinder liners, pistons, piston rings, and liner seals - Replace cylinder head gaskets - Inspect and recondition cylinder heads (valves, seats, guides) - Replace all gaskets and seals (upper gasket set) - Overhaul fuel injectors or replace with remanufactured units - Inspect connecting rod bearings ### Every 16,000–24,000 Hours - Major overhaul — all in-frame overhaul items plus: - Replace main and connecting rod bearing shells - Inspect and regrind crankshaft if necessary - Replace crankshaft seals (front and rear) - Overhaul oil and water pumps - Replace all drive belts, tensioners, and pulleys - Recondition or replace turbocharger(s) - Full engine alignment check

    Essential Spare Parts to Stock

    **High-frequency consumables (carry on board):**

  34. Oil filters (4 per change × 4 changes = 16 per year)
  35. Primary fuel filter/water separator elements (4 per year)
  36. Secondary fuel filters (8 per year — 2 per change)
  37. Air filter elements (2 per year)
  38. Raw water pump impeller (2 per year)
  39. Heat exchanger zinc anodes (4 per year)
  40. Drive belt set (1 spare)
  41. **Overhaul parts (order in advance):**

  42. Complete in-frame overhaul kit (12× liner/piston/ring sets + gaskets)
  43. Turbocharger cartridge kit
  44. Electronic unit injector set (12× remanufactured or new)
  45. Cylinder head bolt set (stretch bolts — replace at every head removal)
  46. **Emergency spares (recommended on board):**

  47. 1× spare fuel injector
  48. 1× spare turbocharger cartridge
  49. Thermostat set
  50. Water temperature sensor
  51. Oil pressure sensor
  52. Starter solenoid
  53. CAT 3512 Performance Monitoring

Regular performance monitoring catches problems before they become failures:

  54. Record exhaust temperatures for each cylinder bank — deviation >30°C indicates injector or valve problems
  55. Monitor turbo boost pressure — declining boost signals compressor fouling or bearing wear
  56. Track fuel consumption — a 5% increase at the same load suggests injector wear or timing issues
  57. Check crankcase pressure — rising blowby indicates piston ring wear
  58. Oil pressure trend — declining pressure at operating temperature signals bearing wear
  59. Coolant temperature stability — fluctuations indicate thermostat or water pump issues
  60. Caterpillar's electronic engine management system (ADEM) provides diagnostic trouble codes via the CAT ET (Electronic Technician) software. Always read and clear DTCs during each service interval.
