    Wärtsilä W46 Maintenance Intervals

    ### Running hours-based schedule:

  24. Every 1,000 hours: Oil and filter change. Fuel filter change. Check turbocharger. Drain water from fuel system.
  25. Every 2,000 hours: Inspect fuel injection equipment. Check valve clearances. Inspect starting air valves.
  26. Every 4,000 hours: Overhaul fuel injectors. Inspect cylinder heads through indicator ports. Service turbocharger (compressor side cleaning).
  27. Every 8,000 hours: Remove and inspect cylinder heads — recondition valves and seats. Replace injector nozzles. Inspect piston crowns (via scavenge ports or endoscope).
  28. Every 12,000–16,000 hours: Piston pull — full inspection of pistons, rings, and cylinder liners. Replace piston rings. Measure liner wear. Inspect connecting rod bearings.
  29. Every 24,000–32,000 hours: Major overhaul — all pistons, liners, bearings, and crankshaft inspection. Turbocharger complete overhaul. All auxiliary system overhauls.
  30. Wärtsilä 46 engines are designed for a total service life exceeding 200,000 running hours with proper maintenance, making them among the most durable medium-speed engines available.

    W46 Condition Monitoring

Maximise time between overhauls with systematic condition monitoring:

  31. Cylinder pressure monitoring — Use electronic indicator to measure peak pressure, compression pressure, and mean indicated pressure per cylinder. Identifies injector faults, valve leaks, and ring wear.
  32. Exhaust gas temperature monitoring — Record per-cylinder exhaust temperatures at every load. Deviation >25°C from the mean indicates an individual cylinder problem.
  33. Crankshaft deflection measurement — Take deflections every 4,000 hours. Increasing deflections signal main bearing wear or hull/foundation changes.
  34. Lube oil analysis — Sample every 500 hours. Track iron, copper, lead, tin, and silicon content trends.
  35. Cylinder liner wear measurement — Measure at top dead centre (TDC) position where wear is greatest. Maximum allowable wear typically 0.4–0.6% of original bore diameter.
  36. Turbocharger vibration monitoring — Trend overall vibration levels to predict bearing wear.
