MaK M25/M32 Cylinder Head Torque (N·m) & Replacement Parts

Quick answer: MaK M25/M32 cylinder head studs are tightened in a cross pattern to 200 N·m, then 450 N·m, then a final 90° + 90° angle turn. Need the head, gasket set or valve gear? MaK medium-speed marine diesel engines — now part of the Caterpillar Marine family — are known for their exceptional reliability and long service life. However, cylinder head replacement is an inevitable part of major overhaul cycles. Understanding the procedure and having the right parts ready is essential for minimising vessel downtime.

When Does a MaK Cylinder Head Need Replacement?

  1. Cracked head — Detected during pressure testing or visually during inspection
  2. Severely worn valve seats — Seats ground beyond minimum thickness limit
  3. Warped head face — Exceeds flatness tolerance; cannot be re-machined
  4. Damaged injector bore — Corrosion or mechanical damage to the injector tube seating area
  5. Scheduled major overhaul — Typically at 24,000–32,000 running hours for MaK M25/M32 engines
  6. Parts Required for MaK Cylinder Head Replacement

    **For the head itself:**

  7. Cylinder head assembly (new or reconditioned — reconditioned is often preferred for cost)
  8. Cylinder head gasket (fire ring type for MaK engines)
  9. Cylinder head stud bolts and nuts (replace if showing any thread damage)
  10. Stud bolt lubricant/anti-seize compound
  11. **Valve gear (replace during head work):**

  12. Exhaust valve spindle × 2 (Nimonic alloy — critical for heat resistance)
  13. Inlet valve × 2
  14. Valve seat rings (exhaust and inlet) — press-fitted into head
  15. Valve stem seals
  16. Valve springs (inner and outer sets)
  17. Valve spring retainer plates and cotters
  18. Rocker arm shaft and rocker arms
  19. Push rods
  20. **Fuel system:**

  21. Fuel injector (replace or overhaul when accessing the head)
  22. Injector O-ring and copper sealing washer
  23. Fuel injection pipe (inspect and replace if showing fatigue cracking)
  24. **Cooling system:**

  25. Cylinder head O-ring seals (cooling water passages)
  26. Cylinder cover O-rings
  27. Cylinder Head Torquing Procedure (MaK M32)

Correct torquing of cylinder head studs is critical. MaK uses angle-torque tightening:

  28. Clean and lubricate all stud threads and nut bearing faces
  29. Run down nuts finger tight
  30. Torque to initial value (typically 200 N·m) in cross pattern
  31. Torque to intermediate value (typically 450 N·m) in cross pattern
  32. Final angle tighten (typically 90° + 90°) in cross pattern
  33. Mark nut positions after final tightening
  34. Always refer to the specific engine manual for your cylinder bore size and variant.

    Post-Installation Checks

  35. Verify valve clearances and adjust per engine manual specifications
  36. Pressure test cooling system before starting engine
  37. Check fuel injection timing after head installation
  38. Run engine at low load for initial 30 minutes; monitor exhaust temperatures
  39. Re-check valve clearances after first 100 running hours (hot check)
  40. New vs. Reconditioned Heads

For MaK engines, reconditioned cylinder heads from reputable suppliers offer excellent value. A properly reconditioned head includes:

  41. Complete valve gear replacement
  42. Pressure and leak testing
  43. Surface grinding to specified flatness
  44. Valve seat replacement where necessary
  45. MarineLink Solutions can supply both new and quality-reconditioned MaK cylinder heads for M20, M25, M32, and M43 engines. Contact us at sales@marinelinksolutions.com for availability and pricing.

    MaK M32C and M43 Variants

The procedure above applies with modifications to the MaK M32C (common-rail) and M43 series. The M43 has a significantly larger bore and uses different torque values — always consult the specific engine documentation.
